The Ambang Merdeka Assembly

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

It was a rather chilly morning on the 30th of August, where schools across the nation are supposed to celebrate the eve of our National Day. Arangnites glared anxiously into the drizzling sky, hoping that the rain would stop to allow the celebrations. Alas, at the last moment, it did.

The whole school was gathered on the school field and as usual, national anthems, school songs and speeches. Frankly, the assembly itself was rather boring, but still, there were some stuff worth mentioning here: the 7-time ‘Merdeka’ shout led by En.Harris:

Then it was the march and formations by our Police and Fire-fighters Cadets, only to be greeted by snorts of laughter from the students. Not much of a fuss, but of course, well worth of their daily practice. Well, after that, there were some dances and performances which were also, uh, kinda typical.. you know..

Andd.. the assembly ends and the fun begins. First, it was the Merdeka sales. The school canteen was turned into a crowded food fair, offering drinks, ice-cream, sweet corn, BBQ chicken, and more.

Then it was the much awaited Live Band performance by our own soon-to-be artists. Although the preparations took some time, but the wait was well worth it as they gave an excellent performance albiet some tiny mistakes. The crowd cheered on as the band performed latest pop songs in all three languages.

Okok, calm down girls and don’t get disappointed: he’s taken. Ok, back on topic, after their performance, their singers became instant celebrities. Girls armed with digicams and camera-equipped handphones began chasing them around for the photo oppotunity. All in all, everyone clearly enjoyed the Live Band performance.

After that, it was the karaoke event. Amateur singers began invading the stage for their 3 minutes of fame (or shame, your descision). Even our beloved Mr.Yeo and Mr.Tan took part.

Now let’s leave the school canteen. Over at the school field, the games were on. Students from all forms were registered in groups and took part in this event. It began with an exciting tug-a-war event where 5 Atom emerged as champions.

Anyway, after that, it was the line-up-all-your-belongings-and-see-who-lines-the-longest game. Basically, you just have to line up all your belongings on the field and see which team has the longest line of stuff. Everyone started off with shoes, socks, belts, spare t-shirts, then shoelaces and valuables. Eventually, they resort to their own clothes and bodies. The school field was turned into a prisoner-camp with half-naked prisoners laying head to toe. It was a sight to behold. Photos anyone? :P

Of course I have much close up photos of them here, but we have to think of some degree of uhh, embarassment of posting your half-naked photos on the world wide web now, right? Hehe.

Well, after that it was the balancing the ping pong ball game. It, too, was carried out with much fun.

At around 12 noon, all actvities ended and eveyone headed back home happily.

Merdeka Month Celebrations!

Wednesday, August 17th, 2005

All spirits were high and wild during today’s merdeka month celebration in a special assembly held this morning. Boy, had anyone seen our school so energetic and ahem, crazy :P Nevertheless, everyone was in a patriotic mood and despite the hot weather, we celebrated in joy and fun. What do you get when you gather a thousand arangnites each armed with a flag? Insanity! Ok, to some extent but it really was a stunning sight to see.

And oh yeah, did anyone miss those Form 5 seniors acting like kids running around wildly waving flags in the air? No offense big bro’s, but still, nothing beats to be patriotic right?

And of course, you shouldn’t have missed those tap dancin’ prefects on the first floor. :P All in all, the assembly was very successful and everyone headed back to class with a deep smile carved on their faces.
